In level flight cruise, the ground adjustable elevator trim tab has undoubtedly been set for zero stick-loading in this condition at which most flying time is spent. The pilot is thought to be the designer, Gerard Fane.

In a low speed fly-past with flaps fully down, a little 'up elevator' is required to maintain level flight, the lowered position of the trim tab assisting this setting. The high position of the pilot's seat ahead of the wing provides an excellent view of the forward hemisphere.

In a slight left bank, the ailerons show a little left bank applied, either to prevent the bank increasing or to level off while the pilot is keeping his eye on the photographer. Outer wing leading-edge slots were shown on a published drawing but cannot be seen in photographs.

The F1/40 is flying away out of our listing and its own short existence, no doubt to the disappointment of its designer and the others connected with its production. But, with the bombing raids on British cities and with British forces hard pressed world wide, it was soon forgotten.

On take-off, with one notch of flap for maximum lift, the F1/40 is seen just starting to climb after lift-off. A ground adjustable trim tab is now fitted to the starboard elevator, some experimentation being suggested by an earlier photo showing one on the port side.
