Предпринималась попытка приспособить Sturgeon для борьбы с подводными лодками, для чего последний, 24-й по счету, планер переоборудовали в вариант, получивший обозначение S.B.3. Отличительными особенностями данной машины стали носовая часть большего диаметра, обеспечившая размещение поисковой РЛС и двух операторов, а также силовая установка в составе двух турбовинтовых двигателей Armstrong Siddeley Mamba мощностью по 1475 л. с. Самолет поднялся в воздух в августе 1950 года, но результаты испытаний оказались неудовлетворительными, и в качестве противолодочного выбрали Fairey Gannet AEW.Mk 3.

Регистрационный номер: WF632 [9] Looking remarkably spooky, the Short SB-3 was a version of the Sturgeon designed to meet Specification M.6/49 for a carrier-borne anti-submarine aircraft. Two AS Mamba engines were fitted but the Gannet was also produced to this specification and was much more suitable on carrier decks. WF632 was first flown on 12th August 1950. Two radar operators were fitted into the nose compartment with a radar scanner below. A second prototype, WF636, never flew.
